Good afternoon to all of you!

Here is your make up work for this marking period. Remember that in order for you to achieve the full credit you need to:
* Turn your work in no later than 7:30AM on Friday March 22nd, 2013
* Your work MUST be complete, organized, neat and clean.
* You must show all your work (process and checks)
* You must copy instructions (everything is handwritten)
* It MUST be on a separate paper (NOT IN YOUR NOTEBOOK)

Here is the work:

Topic: Equations and inequalities

Write and solve an equation for each problem.

1.) A mason is laying a brick foundation 72 in. wide. Each brick is 6in. wide. How many bricks will the mason need across the width of the foundation?

2. )You buy 12 apples. You also buy a box of cereal that cost $3.35. The bill is $8.75. How much does each apple cost?

Solve each equation:

3.) x + 7 = 12

4) 13 + d = 44

5) 5n = 45.5

6) -1/3 t = 24

7) m - 1/3 = 1/6

Write and solve an inequality for each problem.

8) A ferry can safely transport at most 220 people. There are already 143 people aboard. How many more people can the ferry take aboard?

9) A sports drink cost $1.49 per bottle. At most how many bottles can you buy if you have $12?

10) Alex and his mother spent at least $130 while shopping for new clothes. Alex spent $52. How much money did his mother spent?

11) Describe the similarities and differences between solving inequalities and equations. Include examples.

Solve each inequality. Graph your solution

12) n + 12> 15

13) m - 8 < -17

14) v/ -8 > 6

15) y - 14 > 10

16) -7k < -84

Multiple choice

17) Which pair of numbers has a product that is greater than its sum?
a) -2, -5                  b) - 3, 3                      c) 4, -2                    d) 0, 1

18) What is the solution of 5y + 11 = 56?
a) 8                         b) 9                             c) 13                       d) 10

19) Which variable expression can be described by the word phrase "r increased by 2"?
a) 2r                       b)r + 3                        c) r - 2                      d) r/2

20) Your friend divided 0.56 by 0.7 and got 8 for an answer. This answer is NOT correct. Which answer is correct?
a)0.08                   b) 0.008                       c) 0.8                       d)80

6th grade homework for Friday March 15th, 2013

Good afternoon!
This homework is for all of you to review how to solve one-step equations.
Remember that when solving you must always work with inverse operations and that your goal is to isolate the variable (leave the variable alone).

Solve the equation. Check your answers. (Remember you must always show your work)
a) 27x = 0

b) t/18 = 9

c)105 + r = 105

d) q + 12 = 20

e) x - 32 = 20

f) 20m = 40

g) 9u = 81.9

h) A florist delivers flowers to 12 different people. If each customer pays the same amount and the florist is paid $180 total, how much did each customer pay? Use the equation 12p = 180 where p is the price paid by each person.

i) A mailman delivered 63 pieces of mail to one neighborhood. Each house received 9 pieces of mail. How many houses were in the neighborhood? Write and solve an equation.

j) A basketball player usually gets 21 points a game. At the end of the third quarter in one game he had 13 points. If he scores 2 points for each basket, will 3, 4, or 5 more baskets give him exactly 21 points? Explain.

Have a great afternoon!

6th grade homework due Thursday March 7th, 2013

The following homework is for all of you to review operations with integers and decimals. Remember that in Math it is very important that you practice at all times. I know you can all do great!

Rules for operations with integers:
* Multiplying and dividing: Same sign is ALWAYS POSITIVE/ Different signs is ALWAYS NEGATIVE
* Adding and subtracting: Same sign, I keep the sign and I add the absolute value/ Different signs, I subtract the absolute value and keep the sign of the integer with the greatest absolute value

Rules for operations with decimals:
* Adding and subtracting: I must arrange my decimals matching the decimal point, and keep the decimal point in the same place in my result.
* Multiplying: Multiply as you always do. At the end, count the number of decimal places you have in your factors and then move the decimal point as many times in your product.
* Dividing: remember you divisor CANNOT be a decimal.

Exercises:

Simplify:

a) 23.68 / 6.4 (Division)
b) 0.54 + 0.027
c) 4.6 - 3.87
d) 2.7 x 6.25
e) At a grocery store, you buy hamburger weighing 1.42lb, sausage weighing 2.16lb, and chicken weighing 3.73lb. How many pounds of meat did you buy? If each pound costs $0.56, how much money would you spend?

a) 14 + (-8)
b) 17 - (-12)
c) -5(6)
d) 125/(-5) (Division)
e)You earn $5.25 an hour at your job in a restaurant but pay for any food you eat. On Friday, you receive a check for 7 hours of work, minus $8.90 for food. What is the amount on your check?

Have a great afternoon!
